Season 2, Episode 9 – The Retirement Party, Part 1

Burt and Matt tell Dan about the Neon Gutter Crew’s latest trip to Vegas, this time able to spend more than $39 a Day (Think $40 or $41). In Part 1, they luxuriate in free rooms, eat “healthy” food, invent new cocktails, win and lose at poker, blackjack, and craps, see magic, and meet up with Ski for the Sigma Derby Handicapper’s Challenge. And Matt expresses his deep disappointment that his friends would rather drink strawberry daiquiris than throw him an elaborate retirement party to celebrate his recent separation from the world of employment.

With special thanks to Losander and the Las Vegas Magic Theater. Want to see a very cool show in an intimate showroom? Something that isn’t the typical arena show where you’re a mile away? Losander is the man and the Las Vegas Magic Theater is the place.

And special thanks to Alex Lundgren for his cool Sigma Derby songs, which you’ll hear in Part 2. Check out Derby Nights Down at the D and 200 to 1 on his YouTube channel.

Bogus Rio Water Surcharge Sign
Robert and Jeff were greeted with the following sign in their room and spent the entire weekend peeing in the shower or running down to the casino, unaware the sign was created and put there by Matt. To be clear: There is NO water usage surcharge at the Vegas hotels… yet.
Entering the Poker Palace
On a starless night, the Neon Gutter crew approaches what Matt says is the best casino in Las Vegas. What lies beyond those doors is what must also be in heaven.
Poker Palace Casino Rules
The Poker Palace’s strict rules regarding how customers treat their sweet, tender machines are posted at the entrances, and randomly throughout the casino. It is unclear what will be removed and banned: the machines, the damage, the one doing the damaging?
South Point Healthy Breakfast Section
The South Point’s buffet features one small section for those seeking nutritious options. Whether they are truly healthy or just sarcastically so is unknown.
Matt dressed up for basketball
Matt expected everyone to really dress up to watch their alma mater win in the Big West basketball tournament. Turns out, only he did, and he spent the night answering pesky questions from strangers about whether he owned a private island upon which he was doing evil experiments with lasers.
Daiquiris at Jerry's Nugget
Jerry’s Nugget not only serves up the cheapest craps game in the valley, they also deliver a tasty strawberry daiquiri made with real strawberries… and love. Not so much the alcohol. Don’t expect to get drunk on them, though.
Ski and Burt at Sigma Derby
Ski and Burt react differently to the exciting action on the tiny track at the D’s Sigma Derby.
Three deep at the Sigma Derby
The Sigma Derby was quiet when we arrived, but quickly filled and overflowed as people wanted to see what the commotion and hubbub was about. Even the rookies took quickly to insulting the ponies and other players. Once a Sigma Derby fan, forever a Sigma Derby fan.
Neon Gutter Crew at the Sigma Derby
Ski and the Neon Gutter crew celebrate a successful day at the races. Ski holds the Sigma Derby Handicapper’s Challenge Championship Trophy as the 2025 title holder.
Losander Floating Table
Losander makes a table float during his Masters of Magic show at the Las Vegas Magic Theater. How he did it, we have no idea. Try to figure it out for yourself. Tickets for the intimate theater are available at best5starshow.com.
Las Vegas Magic Theater Showroom
The comfortable and intimate Las Vegas Magic Theater showroom where Losander and others perform to small crowds with plenty of audience interaction.
